What is “sensible décor"? With animals & four kids ranging in age from 2-14, our house sees a lot of food, dirt, spills, and unknown stains. For us, sensible décor meant picking products we loved, that didn’t show sand or dirt easily or require constant supervision to keep clean. In the past we tried to hide the messes with dark colored furniture (think deep brown leather sectionals with black media consoles and mahogany brown area rugs) but found the atmosphere to be uninviting and depressing. We no longer believe to live in a house with kids and animals means you need to hide in a cave of dark and uninviting colors.
In our new home the vibe is all about light, airy, and easy to clean, yes you can have all of that together! First, let me share what didn’t work for us. When we first moved in, we struggled to find a sofa that fit nicely into our open concept living area and accommodated 6 people. We finally found the Windsor Sofa at American Signature Furniture, it is sold as a sectional, but we got it with 4 recliners in a straight row. At first we loved it, it fit our whole family then some and the recliners were a huge plus! However, eventually we found it nearly impossible to keep clean, and it was too stiff for us to enjoy more than about 30 minutes of TV. Also, because of the modular design and recliners, the back of the sofa consisted of large lines and spaces that weren’t aesthetically pleasing for an open concept room. The overall style was also a little too formal for the style we were going for. This sofa would be better suited for a formal living area free of children and pets.
We knew we needed something with less maintenance and a major cozy factor & we made the best decision ever when we upgraded to the famous LoveSac! LoveSac offered the options we needed for an open concept living room and the fabric options were endless, but no detail sold it more than its ability to be thrown in the washing machine! Before buying the LoveSac, we went to their showroom (check their website for a location near you). At the showroom we were able to get free fabric swatches (also available online for free), talk with others who owned LoveSacs and get personal insight, & sit on the sofas with different fills (Standard Foam, Lovesoft, or Down Blend). Sitting on the different “fills” was important since there was no way to discover our individual preference otherwise. Another critical point is that not all LoveSac fabrics are machine washable! When we chose our fabric, we did not know this and were lucky it turned out to be washable. Be sure to visit their fabric page and filter by machine washable to ensure you are getting the most versatile fabric choices.
In the end, we chose a configuration with 6 seats 6 sides (2 deep), with rolled arms, which provided 4 actual seats with backs and sides, 2 extra pillows/back cushions, and 2 ottomans (see picture), in the fabric Beachwood Rained Chenille, with Lovesoft fill. We have had this sofa now for a few months and have not been disappointed. We love the option of adding rolled arms, allowing for a more traditional and elegant look. We ordered ours in the fabric Beachwood Rained Chenille, which turned out to be the perfect combination of light & airy and dark enough to hide everyday dirt transfer. The neutral color pairs well with various throw pillows and blankets, try these Mernette pillows with a cozy cashmere blanket, like this EP Mode throw for a subtle splash of color. If we were to do it over, we would get all 4 as deep seats- the seats are all the same size, you just flip the direction to change from deep to standard, however, the modular panels that act as the back as the sofa are specific to the size you intend to use. Our sofa is about 144” long 44” deep without ottoman and 75” deep with ottoman- measurements are with “deep seat” at each end.
I cannot imagine ever regretting this purchase. Our cats have thrown up on it, kids have gotten red sauce and other unidentifiable stains on it, and it all came out in the wash. I do not put the covers in the dryer for fear they will shrink, but they do air dry quickly (5ish hours). Best of all, we don’t spend my days yelling at the kids to be careful with the sofa. The total spent with taxes was $6,169.13, we did use a promo code for either 15% or 20% off. It is easy to spend far more than that between sound systems and accessories, but shop around before dropping all your cash at LoveSac, Amazon carries versions of some of their accessories at lower prices, check out this USB Power Hub Housing for power supply right at your sofa & for your drinks and remotes consider this Elimiko sofa cup holder. LoveSac is almost always running a promo code, so if they aren’t just wait a week or two and they will, do not buy at full price!
Key take-aways regarding LoveSac:
The sofa is expensive! Do not buy it unless you have a promotional code! Also consider the longevity, we have already washed the fabric multiple times and it looks good as new. The sofa we bought less than a year ago that we could not keep clean was $3,500 before taxes, and was tossed in the trash, a complete loss.
Choose a fabric that is machine washable - visit their fabric page and filter by machine washable to ensure you are getting the correct fabric
Consider how the arm style flows with your décor style
Rolled Arm= elegance and traditional
Standard Arm which is more modern, and the flatness may work as a space for remotes or drinks
Visit a showroom before choosing your fill, they are not created equal!
Although the seats come in deep and standard they are all the same size, you just flip the direction to change from deep to standard, however, the modular panels that act as the back as the sofa are specific to the size you intend to use it, so a deep back panel will not match a standard seat and vice versa.
